Summary:

Transgenic CoreThe Washington State University Transgenic Core is supported by the School of Molecular Biosciences, the Center for Reproductive Biology, and the College of Veterinary Medicine. Funds for the development of the Core were provided by a generous grant from the M.J. Murdock Charitable Foundation. The Transgenic Services Core is dedicated to assisting researchers and technicians in the production, preservation and maintenance of transgenic and gene targeted mice for specific research needs. We also serve as a source of knowledge, experience, and instruction in the many uses of genetically modified mice in biomedical research.

The Transgenic Core is a fee-for-service operation that provides services to all WSU investigators as well as outside institutions and investigators. Members of the Center for Reproductive Biology receive a 50% discount on all services.

Services:

  • Mouse husbandry, breeding and research development consultation
  • Embryo and sperm cryopreservation
  • Strain rederivation as a means of strain rescue or pathogen/parasite eradication using fresh or frozen embryos
  • In vitro fertilization using fresh or frozen embryos/sperm

Cost of Services:

Services include but are not limited to the following:

ServiceNon-CRB MemberCRB Member
Full Service Cryopreservation$775.00$385.00
Rederivation from Frozen Stock$750.00$375.00
Straight Rederivation$1,100.00$550.00
Rederivation and Cryopreservation$1,450.00$725.00
Sperm Cryopreservation$150.00$75.00

Benefits of Cryopreservation and Rederivation:

  • Provides "insurance" in case of animal loss due to breeding failure, pathogens or natural disasters
  • Reduce cage costs when mice are no longer needed for experimental purposes
  • Reduces demand for limited animal housing space
  • Shipment of cryopreserved embryos simplifies importation and animals and avoids expensive and lengthy quarantines
  • Eliminates viral, bacterial and parasitic infections in valuable mouse colonies

Future Services:
The following techniques are currently under development and will be available soon:

  • ES Cell injection
  • DNA microinjection
  • Nuclear transfer
  • Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)
  • Live Cell Imaging
